Podcasts

Resources Section

Podcasts are either audio or sometimes video files presented in a series. The files are presented on many topics. The name comes from a combination of the name “iPod” and “broadcast”. Podcasts are an important resource used by Skiva management and clients. Because the information is presented in short and simple bite-sized chunks, they can be opened and listened to in a short space of time, making it a very time-effective form of imparting information. They are released frequently and contain the latest information on any chosen topic. Skiva uses the information in the following podcasts to explain, format and present data from a wide range of different viewpoints.

Software Testing Podcast

There are several well respected professionals who have released podcast series on the topic of software testing. The key elements for selecting the best series to listen to include the structure of the podcast, the stature of the presenter, and the quality of their presentation. Scan through the updates to the series to be sure that there is recent material as this indicates that the presenter is active. Material from a recognized site or authority is better for assuring accuracy.

One example is the Software Test Podcast series released by Emily Shebesta and Michael Raveling. The link can be found here. [https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/software-test-podcast/id463967452]

Microsoft Web Development Podcast

Podcasts on various development issues and events are widespread on the internet. Microsoft development podcasts number in the thousands. The concepts of selecting the best use of your listening time are the same, regardless of the topic of the podcast. In a field as large as MS development, look for a respected presenter, preferably one who is associated with the MS development category. The many podcasts relating to Microsoft development should be as current as possible, since information in the IT world changes so rapidly.

Microsoft maintains a constantly updated web link to various podcasts. One example can be found here. [http://www.microsoft.com/winme/0506/24231/technet_fy06.xml ]

Business Analysis Podcast

People tune into podcasts because they want to be able to select their own information topics and levels. Unlike television or radio, where users are only able to pick from the shows that are currently being aired, podcasts are always available from previous dates. They are also constantly being added to so that information is as current as the last posting. IT personnel are often heavily involved in analysis of existing business systems, so an overview of the topic is beneficial.

The BA Coach website offers a number of business analysis related podcasts. The website can be found here. [http://www.thebacoach.com/category/business-analyst-podcast/]

Personal Development Podcast

For several reasons, podcasts are a viable alternative to commercial broadcasts using radio or television. Production costs are low, so more viewpoints and voices can be heard. Podcasts are narrow by definition. Only those individuals who have an interest in a specific topic will make the effort to sign up and listen to the topics available. There are hundreds, even thousands of niche podcasts which cover topics which have a smaller audience size.

A video podcast posted by Cleland Thom is titled “Creating an effective action plan – a personal development podcast” It is part of a longer series and can be found at here. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScJEAef_l5k ]
